A head-on collision between a passenger bus and Toyota Hilux, a government vehicle, left one person dead and 23 others injured.

The accident which occurred on Mombasa Road saw the two vehicles burst into flames in the wee hours of Friday morning around 1 am.

Machakos County police boss Joseph Ole Napeiyan confirmed the incident and said it happened along Nairobi – Mombasa highway near the Shell filling station, a few metres from Maanzoni Lodge in Athi River, Machakos County.

Police said the deceased was the driver of the Toyota Hilux. The 23 others who got injured were passengers in the bus.

The accident report was filed at Kyumbi police station at Makutano Junction, Machakos County.

The fire was put out by the Machakos Fire Brigade team.

“The bus driver and the passengers were injured after the vehicles burst into flames. The fire was put out by a fire brigade team from the Machakos County government,” Napeiyan said.

The injured were taken to Machakos Level 5 hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

The deceased, who could not be immediately identified was taken to the Machakos Hospital morgue.
