Two suspected police officers were on Saturday, April 29 killed by a mob at Kanthanje Market, Tharaka Nithi County.

The identity of the two police officers is yet to be confirmed but are suspected to be attached to the Kathwana police station.

The incident began when the two who were not in police uniforms reportedly went to an M-Pesa shop and confronted the shop attendant who has been identified as Murithi Njeru.

Njeru then allegedly shouted for help and a group of people from Kathanje market rushed to the shop and attacked the two men.

"I can confirm that two people, reportedly police officers attached to Kathwana police station, have been killed by a mob at Kanthanje market. We are yet to confirm their identity. I have personally taken an injured civilian to St Orsola Hospital," Igambang'ombe Deputy County Commissioner Julius Arap Too said.

Igambang'ombe Sub-County Police Commander Charles Muchiri on his part said that the police have launched investigations into the incident to establish what transpired.

The incident comes weeks after two people were killed including a bodaboda operator who was allegedly shot dead by a police officer during demonstrations in Chuka Town.
