"Ananipenda (Pastor Mackenzie), ata akiondoka hapa alisema wewe utabaki hapa uangalie hizi vitu zangu."

The firstborn son of Controversial Pastor Paul Mackenzie has for the first time spoken about his relationship with his dad who is now in custody for allegedly occasioning the deaths of his followers through radical teachings.

Dan Mackenzie, a 21-year-old who runs a bodaboda in Malindi, has defended his dad saying it is impossible that he could have caused the murder of all those people.

He said his father stopped preaching way back in 2019 and there is no way he could be accused of misleading his followers.

"Sijawahi toka huku town. Alisema anaeda kununua shamba huko mbele ya Shakahola kufanya ukulima. Nikasema ni sawa, mimi si mkulima nitabaki hapa town nifanye shuguli zangu akasema haina shida. Nilibaki hapa na nyanya na mama," he said.

He describes his father as a loving man who was kind and incapable of committing murder.

"Ananipenda (Pastor Mackenzie), ata akiondoka hapa alisema wewe utabaki hapa uangalie hizi vitu zangu na kitu yoyote ikikosekana unaniambia," he said.

Though he says he never went there, he claims they often received maize and tomatoes from Dad's Shakahola forest farm.

He says he visited them more often and he talked to them briefly before getting back to the forest.

He added that his father's teachings on education and fasting were not mandatory as claimed.

He noted that even though he did not finish school, it was because of his own reasons and not his dad's influence.

"Hayo yote ni uongo kwa sababu hakuenda huko na washirika. Alienda peke take. Alienda kununua shamba peke take kwa sababu alikua anataka kulima. Alianza ukulima 2015," he said.
