“In a location, we cannot have chiefs and illicit alcohol at the same time. One has to give way and since alcohol cannot make a decision because it has no mind, the person to make the decision is the chief.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued an 11-day ultimatum to chiefs in Nyeri County to end illicit alcohol and drug abuse.

Speaking on Friday, May 17 at Mukurwe-ini Technical Training Institute in Nyeri, Gachagua warned chiefs that they will risk losing their jobs if they do not end the drug menace.

The DP stated that chiefs and illicit alcohol cannot be in the same location.

“The war on alcohol and drug abuse is on and the government policy on that matter is very clear and I will pronounce it very clearly on behalf of President William Ruto that chiefs and their assistants are incompatible with drugs and illicit alcohol,” said Gachagua.

He added, “In a location, we cannot have chiefs and illicit alcohol at the same time. One has to give way and since alcohol cannot make a decision because it has no mind, the person to make the decision is the chief. The Chief should decide if it is him who will stay in the location or the drugs. They have 11 days towards the end of this month to make this decision.”

The Second in Command stated that as a Christian he does not wish the chiefs to lose their jobs saying that the work of the government is to create jobs.

“I am a Christian and a husband to a pastor, I have a lot of mercy and I don’t want the chiefs to lose their jobs because my role is to create employment,” he added.

The DP also warned local leaders about drug peddlers saying that their own children will end up consuming the drugs.
