The Bill says if a holiday falls on a Tuesday, Monday becomes a holiday too and if it falls on a Thursday, Friday becomes another holiday.

Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa has proposed a Bill in parliament that will give Kenyans an extra day to rest in the event a Public Holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday.

Dubbed Public Holiday Amendment Bill, Thang'wa said his Bill seeks to ensure Kenyans are not inconvenienced whenever a holiday falls on the said days.

"In a year where a public holiday falls on a Tuesday, the preceding day (Monday) shall be a public holiday or when it falls on a Thursday, the succeeding day (Friday) shall be a public holiday," the Senator proposes in his bill.

The senator says the Bill enables Kenyans to get more time to rest and be more productive. He says such an arrangement will spur local tourism and contribute massively to the economy.

He says the idea is already implemented in countries such as the Philippines.

Further dubbing it as 'holiday economics' Thangwa says the arrangement will provide workers with ample time to rest and recharge and prioritize their well-being.

"It allows for quality time with loved ones, celebrations of traditions and the opportunity for travel and tourism," Thang'wa said.

"Extending public holidays supports economic growth and promotes domestic tourism by encouraging longer trips and visits to new destinations, benefitting the hospitality and tourism industries."

The senator has asked Kenyans to rally their MPs and senators to support the Bill so that Kenyan workers can benefit.
