The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has unveiled former MP David Were as its candidate for the Matungu by-election.

Were who served as former Matungu legislator between 2002 and 2017 was handed a direct ticket by the Orange party.

Confirming the nomination, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna noted that Were is the best placed candidate to win the seat for the party.

The decision to hand a direct ticket to Were has not augured well with some ODM aspirants in the region, who were hoping for nominations to determine the party’s flag bearer.

One such leader is Paul Achayo who decamped the party two weeks ago citing undemocratic practices.

Were’s nomination means that he’ll face off with ANC’s Peter Nabulindo and several other candidates.

It is important to note that ANC and Ford Kenya are working together in the by-election. As such, Ford Kenya has not fielded a candidate in Matungu, with ANC expected to replicate the same in Kabuchai constituency.

The Matungu by-election is critical as it will see Odinga square it out with his former NASA principals Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula.

The Matungu seat fell vacant after the death of Justus Murunga.
