Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has taken action after an NHIF exposé. 

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has suspended National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) branch managers in all areas that were mentioned during an exposé by NTV. 

Addressing the Media on Monday, June 19, CS Nakhumicha stated that she has directed the NHIF board chairperson to start investigations on the scandal and report to her within forty-eight hours.

“I had a meeting with the NHIF board chair and instructed him to commence investigations, including inviting the whistleblower to share details regarding this heartless and ruthless cartel and ask the board to take action against the culpable staff. I have also directed a preliminary report to be shared with me within 48 hours by the NHIF board,” she stated.

The Health CS also noted that she has asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to liaise with NHIF and carry out investigations on the matter.

"I have made a special request with EACC to liaise with NHIF and carry out comprehensive investigations with the aim of finding out how these cartels siphon resources from NHIF,” she added.

Nakhumicha further instructed the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) and the pharmacy and poisons board to commence investigations on Joykim medical center in Meru Central, St Peters Orthopaedic and Surgical Hospital in Kiambu County, Afya Bora Hospital in Mwea, Kirinyaga, Joy Nursing and Maternity Hospital in Malewa Street, Kamukunji.

Other medical facilities that will be investigated are Afya Bora Hospital Annex in Wanguru, Mwea, Jkim Hospital in Nkupu Imenti South, Beirut Pharmacy and medical center, and Amal Hospital Limited. 

Additionally, she stated that the Ministry of Health will embark on a verification exercise of all payments across the country to flag inconsistencies that may point to abuse of resources and theft.
