“We must defend the free media, we must defend their right to criticize, to say what they want to say even to right propaganda."

President William Ruto has weighed in on Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria’s recent remarks against the media.

Speaking on Wednesday, June 21 during the WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha, Ruto stated that the media must be defended and allowed to criticize the government.

“We must defend the free media, we must defend their right to criticize, to say what they want to say even to write propaganda, say wrong things or falsehood, we must defend that right,” said Ruto.

The Head of State at the same time defended CS Kuria, saying the media should also be criticized when it is wrong.

“We must also defend the right of those who hold the media to account or who call out the media when it goes rogue. We must defend the rights of people like Moses Kuria to speak their mind the same way we defend the media to say all the things they want including the wrong ones,” he added.

Ruto’s remarks come after CS Kuria was blocked by the High Court from attacking media practitioners.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi issued the order on Wednesday, June 21 following a petition applied by human rights defender Charles Mugane.

CS Kuria earlier stated that he will not apologize to the Nation Media Group for his remarks, saying he was once a media owner.

“I am not apologizing. I have been a media owner before, I have been a writer in your newspapers, there is nobody who is pro-media more than me,” Kuria stated.
