Oparanya was arrested on Thursday in Kakamega County.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Senator Edwin Sifuna has claimed that former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya was arrested over the vehicle he was spotted using during the Azimio anti-government protests on Wednesday.

In a tweet on Thursday, July 13, Sifuna alleged that the police are saying the car belongs to the Kakamega County government.

“They have nothing on Oparanya. They are claiming that the car he used during maandamano is property of the County of Kakamega,” said Sifuna.

This comes after the Azimio la Umoja coalition announced that the former county boss has been arrested.

"As we speak we have just learnt of the arrest of the honourable Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya," Eugene Wamalwa said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday evening announced that the government has mobilized security agencies to conduct investigations and carry out arrested on all those who were involved in the anti-government protests.

"The government has tonight mobilized all the law enforcement agencies of the State and the institutions of our country’s criminal justice system to conclude investigations urgently and proceed to the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the planning and execution of the crimes committed today, including those who funded or otherwise aided or abetted the offenders," Kindiki said in a statement.
