Raila's Bodyguard Maurice Ogeta Released - ODM Official

Raila Odinga's bodyguard Maurice Ogeta is now free from his alleged abductors.

ODM director of communication Philip Etale confirmed via Twitter that Ogeta was let free moments past midnight on Saturday, July 22.

Etale claimed that the security man was driven while blindfolded and left in the middle of a Nairobi road.

"Maurice Ogeta, the bodyguard of Raila Odinga was released from police custody a few minutes to 1:00 am and driven while blindfolded and left in the middle of the road in Ruai towards Kangundo. His car is vandalized. However, he is happy to be alive but still distraught and in shock," Etale said. 

On Friday, July 21, the High Court intervened on the matter by ordering the National Police Service (NPS) to produce Ogeta.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi directed NPS to produce Ogeta before any court in Nairobi or within the country.

“That, pending the hearing and determination of this application inter-parties, a writ of habeus corpus is hereby issued directing the 2nd Respondent to produce Maurice Ogeta before a court of competent jurisdiction in Nairobi or any other Court within the Republic of Kenya for an inquiry into the issue of his detention,” read the order in part.

Mugambi certified the application filed by Christopher Ogettah as urgent adding that the case will be mentioned on July 31 for compliance and further direction.

The ODM leader in a video on his Twitter account on Thursday, July 20, Raila stated that Ogeta was abducted on Wednesday and his whereabouts are unknown. Raila demanded his release adding that he will not leave anyone who has been arrested behind. 

Ogeta was allegedly abducted by people in plain clothes while on his way to work on Wednesday morning and driven to an unknown destination.
