Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has been arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts four days after he was arrested by police.

Details of his arrest presented before the court indicate that the former Mungiki leader was allegedly found to be in possession of offensive weapons that include 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus, and three Jembe sticks.

He was also charged with plans to organise unlawful assembly and procession scheduled to take place within Nairobi City County and other parts of the country.

The former Mungiki leader is being also held as a prime suspect in the alleged gun circulation plan. He was not however charged with the alleged offence.

Njenga was arrested while in lower Matasia in Ngong, Kajiado County, and taken to an undisclosed location, his lawyer Ndegwa Njiru said.

He was arrested on Thursday, July 20, 23.

The family said he was in his father’s house when police in unmarked cards arrived at about 8 pm and arrested him.

The team earlier said they wanted to question him over ongoing anti-government protests in the country.

Also charged with a similar offence are Maina Njenga's brother Peter Njoroge Kamunya and another male adult Felix Ratu Lakishe, believed to be his Personal Assistant.
