President Ruto has announced a new price for 50 kg of subsidized fertilizer.

President William Ruto has announced the reduction in prices of 50 kg subsidized fertilizer prices from Ksh 3500 to Ksh 2500.

Addressing the media at State House on Wednesday, August 2, the President noted that the price reduction took effect on Tuesday and 34,000 bags were sold to farmers countrywide.

“We shall immediately begin to bring down the cost of fertilizer from Ksh 3500 to Ksh 2500 per 50-kilogram bag beginning yesterday (Tuesday). Yesterday alone 34,000 bags of subsidized fertilizer were sold to our farmers, a record in a long time,” said Ruto.

The President went on to say the government expected higher uptake of the subsidized fertilizers following the price reduction.

“At this price, we expect significantly higher uptake of fertilizer since fertilizer is the game changer of our agricultural productivity this should translate to higher production in the next planting season,” he added.

Ruto also encouraged farmers to double the use of fertilizers per acre so as to increase agricultural production.

“I encourage farmers to better and greater use of fertilizer to increase yield in the coming seasons. The government is also appealing to farmers to double the use per acre to increase agricultural production,” the Head of State noted.

President Ruto further mentioned that the government aims to produce 61 million bags annually between this year and 2027.

“Our target is to produce 61 million bags annually between this season and 2027. Long rains usually account for 80 percent of a season’s production. From the long rain season alone, an estimated yield of 44 million bags is expected, compared to last year’s 32 million bags,” Ruto asserted.
