"Any principal found demanding extra amount from the parents will face the necessary disciplinary action."

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has cautioned Secondary School heads against hiking fees as schools re-open for the third term.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 30 at Kakamega High School in Kakamega County, the Education CS said any principal who is found demanding extra school fees from parents will face necessary disciplinary action.

Machogu also assured parents that the government will not allow any school head to hike fees

“No one is actually increasing fees, particularly for secondary schools because the amount set by the government is the amount that parents will be expected to pay. For national schools the amount supposed to be paid is Ksh 53,000 per year,” said Machogu.

He added,” No principal or board of school management is supposed to increase even a single cent out of the amount that has been set because we realize that parents are also undergoing a lot of economic hardships. Any principal found demanding extra amount from the parents will face the necessary disciplinary action.”

The Ministry of Education in February announced that school fees in secondary schools are capped at Ksh 53,554 for National Schools and Ksh 40, 535 for the other categories.

The Ministry also directed field education officers to compile information on schools that are charging illegal fees and report them to CS Machogu.
