A mother and her three children were Wednesday evening wiped out in a fire incident in Riamasagara village, Bonchari, Kisii County.

Neighbours who spoke to the press said the fire incident broke out at night as the family was sleeping.

The children were aged 10, 9 and four years old. The fourth child who is six-months-old is in hospital.

 Their mother, Carol Nyaboke, 38, died at Nyangena Hospital while undergoing emergency care.

The husband is said to have survived the fire but sustained burn injuries and is being treated at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

John Ayago's family spokesman said the fire started from where the children were sleeping.

It thereafter spread to other parts of the house. 

"The managed to get out through a hole villagers drilled on the wall. The mother too tried but it appears the burns were severe and she died on the way to the hospital," he said.

Kisii South OCPD Charles Machinji confirmed the incident and said they investigating the incident.

According to police, the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Bodies of the deceased have been taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital awaiting autopsy.
