Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s tournament dubbed ‘Governor Anne Waiguru- Minji Minji Football Cup’ on Sunday October 8 entered its second round with eighty teams fighting for a place in the finals.

The Sunday matches involved eight teams from twenty wards across Kirinyaga county. Five more matches are remaining before the winners of the ward level matches are known.

The ward level winners are expected to proceed to the Sub-County level where twenty teams will battle it out to get to the County level.

The finals of the tournament are scheduled to be played on December 10, 2023.

According to Governor Waiguru, the tournament which is under the theme ‘Nurturing Talent for Livelihood’ will see about five thousand youths from about two hundred football clubs compete from the ward up to the county level.

Kirinyaga County Executive Committee Member for Sports Dennis Musimi observed that the tournament has attracted a huge number of spectator with scouters also moving round to identify talents.

“Apart from the clubs winning money, we also want to expose talents of our youths so that they can be picked to join bigger clubs and become professional players,” Musimi stated.

The winning team will pocket one million shillings while the runners up will receive seven hundred and fifty thousand shillings.

The third team will walk away with five hundred thousand shillings as the fourth and fifth teams will get three hundred and fifty thousand shillings and two hundred thousand shillings respectively.
