''We don’t want to import maize again. Next year will be the last year," President Ruto.

The Government will stop the importation of food items into the country beginning 2025, President William Ruto has announced.

Speaking during the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Eldoret Diocese, on Sunday, October 29, President Ruto said the Government has reformed the agricultural sector as part of efforts to meet the country’s development needs.

''We don’t want to import maize again. Next year will be the last year that we will be importing maize. From 2025, we won’t import even a single sack of maize. All the bags will be produced in Kenya,'' remarked Ruto.

President Ruto regretted that the Government was spending Sh 500 billion every year to import food from other countries, yet such reserves can be produced locally.

In this regard, the President argued that farmers should diversify and intensify their farming methods to increase food production.

"We can use the land we have to double our production by using the right seeds and applying enough fertilizers. By doing this, we will contain food shortages," said President Ruto.
