Police in Taita Taveta arrested a woman for allegedly failing to take her three children to school over religious beliefs.

Reports indicated that the woman claimed her denomination forbids her from taking her children to school.

Taita sub-County Police Commander Onesmus Kombe and Shigaro Assistant Chief Elijah Kimbichi confirmed the arrest, saying investigations into the incident were still ongoing.

The police together with officials from the Ministry of Interior and Coordination have been tracking down parents who are yet to take their children back to school after the resumption of physical learning on January 4.

Infringing on children's rights

According to a police report, the woman told officers that Jesus spoke to her in a dream telling her not to take the children to school.

“She told us that taking children to school is evil and against the doctrines of God. Her husband who works in Mombasa also subscribes to this belief,” Mr Kombe said.

He further stated they will endeavour for the minors to be put under the care of the children's department in the meantime as the mother will be charged with infringing on her kids right to education.
