The women drowned while trying to cross River Muooni on foot. 

First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto has broken silence after floods in Makueni County swept away eight Joyful women as they returned home after attending her meeting in Kasarani on Thursday.

In a statement via X on Friday, November 24 Mama Rachel said she was saddened by the unfortunate incident. 

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the unfortunate incident that has happened to some of our Joyful Women members from Makueni County. I have been informed that the members traveling back from the Joyful Women 14th Anniversary celebrations held at Kasarani Stadium on 23rd November 2023, were swept away while trying to cross River Muooni on foot,” she stated.

The First Lady also expressed her sympathies to the families of the eight women.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends at this difficult time,” she added.

River Muoni which is said to have swept away eight people.

Officials say the eight women may have perished in the floods even as they search for their whereabouts.

Kenya Red Cross coordinator for Makueni County, Evans Peter, said they had deployed their rescue team to follow up on the matter.

At least 70 Kenyans have died since the floods began, according to the Interior Ministry. 

Kenya's Met Office said earlier this week that heavy rains would continue in several parts of the country until Saturday.
