Thursday rains caught many Nairobi residents off-guard. This was after the county experienced several dry days.

Several floods were rendered nearly impassable following heavy rainfall recorded in Nairobi on Thursday, December 14.

Photos and videos shared online showed areas along Mombasa Road flooded. Specifically, the area stretching from City Cabanas to Imara Daima. This caused heavy traffic along the road affecting the Nairobi Expressway.

The houses in Imara Daima were also affected by the flooding situation on Thursday.

Motorists plying Kenyatta Avenue were also inconvenienced by the heavy rain. Most of the rainwater was concentrated on the roads exposing the city's poor drainage system.

The drainage hitch was exposed despite Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja hiring 3,500 youth to help mitigate the effects of El Nino in the country.

Sakaja directed the group named Green Army to unclog drainages and help move residents from areas prone to flooding across the county.

Ruai, Mathare and Kibera were among 436 hotspots identified by Nairobi county.

"We are putting everything in order and already our green army is in the estates to make sure that we do not take any chances," Sakaja stated.

The lack of proper walkways was also highlighted by the rains as most city residents were forced to wage through the flooding water.

However, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed in an interview that construction works to address the situation on Mombasa Road were at an advanced stage.

Murkomen noted that the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) was overseeing the repair works following the completion of the Nairobi Expressway.
