Kenya will lead the United Nations Programme for the year 2024.

Kenya has been elected to chair the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS for the year 2024.

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha in a statement on Friday, December 14 said Kenya was elected to the position during the 53rd UNAIDS programme Coordinating Board held in Geneva, Switzerland.

“Kenya has been elected as the Chair of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS during the 53rd UNAIDS programme Coordinating Board held in Geneva, Switzerland for the year 2024,” Nakhumicha stated.

She added, “This decision puts Kenya on the driver's seat on important decision-making on both local and international levels due to our capacity to respond to HIV/AIDS.”

United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS summit delegates. 

The Health CS observed that social and structural barriers continue to increase the vulnerability of HIV infections amongst the population, particularly affecting adolescent girls and young women.

Nakhumicha mentioned that the government will put deliberate prevention efforts to achieve the collective goal of ending AIDS by 2030.

“As we embrace the responsibility to drive this impactful change, we will intensify prevention efforts, expand access to treatment, activate awareness and sensitization campaigns as well as champion inclusively as we focus on building a future where HIV/AIDs is not a threat to our communities,” said Nakhumicha.

Nakhumicha who did not attend the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board summit was represented by National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC) CEO Ruth Laibon Masha.
