Most people who were travelling upcountry for the Christmas festive season were among those who were caught up in the heavy snarl-up.

By the time of publishing this article, the cause of the heavy traffic had not been revealed by the National Police Service.

However, motorists were compelled to use alternative routes including cutting through the forest within the Rift Valley Escarpment.

The road serves people travelling to the Western parts of the county including Kisumu, Kisii, Kakamega, and Bungoma among other areas.

The incident comes a day after the Nairobi- Mombasa Highway experienced heavy traffic. Police, however, managed to restore normal traffic flow.

An overturned truck caused the heavy traffic which extended from Manyani to Mtito Andei.

Mai Mahiu also serves as the main road for people heading to various areas within the Rift Valley region.
