The 24-year-old's mother had gone to check on him at the station when she learned her son had died mysteriously.

Police in the Kikuyu sub-county are investigating an incident in which a 24-year-old man was found dead inside a police cell.

The deceased was being detained at the Mai Ai Ihii Police Post over an alleged theft of a television set. 

Identified as Kiragu, the young man was apprehended on the evening of Friday, January 26, but was found dead the following morning.

His mother learnt of the demise when she showed up at the station on Saturday morning, January 27, to find out what had transpired.

"He was arrested over a stolen television. The owner informed the police who later arrested him," said the deceased's mother. 

Kikuyu police commander Ronald Kirui confirmed the incident.

The man is said to have allegedly used the pullover he was in to commit suicide. 

Confirming the incident was Kikuyu police commander Ronald Kirui, who called for calmness among the members of the public and the bereaved family as the police expedited investigations.

The police boss confirmed that the officers who were on duty the fateful evening had been interrogated and that the body lying at the City Mortuary would be subjected to an autopsy to establish the cause of death.

"We have already recorded statements from the officers on duty and the family. A post-mortem will be carried out to find out the cause of the death. I therefore urge the parents and community to be patient as we wait for the investigations to conclude," said Kirui.
