The Kenya Railways Corporation has broken silence on a photo doing rounds on social media showing a Madaraka Express passenger coach with empty seats.
In a statement on Friday, February 2, the Kenya Railways management said the photo is not a representation of the actual status of the Madaraka Express Service.
The corporation noted that bookings for travel in the coach are going on as normal.
“Kenya Railways has taken note of a picture doing its rounds on social media, of an empty coach indicating lack of passengers. We wish to state that this picture is in no way a representation of the actual status of the Madaraka Express Service and bookings for travel are going on as normal.
“We remain committed to serving our customers and will do all we can to ensure that rail continues to remain their preferred mode of transport, via the Madaraka Express Service,” Kenya Railways stated.

The viral photo which was first shared on the Facebook social media platform indicated that the SGR coach departed from Mombasa with empty seats as a result of the fare hike.
“This is an SGR coach departing Mombasa today at 10. pm. the coach is literary empty since the fare hike to Ksh 4,500 from Jan 1, 2024,” the picture was captioned.
Kenya Railways in November 2023 hiked passenger fare prices for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
The Madaraka express passenger service currently costs Ksh 4500 from Nairobi to Mombasa in the first class while economy class costs Ksh 1500 up from Ksh 1000.
The corporation also reviewed the prices of the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, Kisumu Safari Train, and Nanyuki Safari Train.
