UoN Students Ordered To Pay For Meals via eCitizen

University of Nairobi (UoN) students will now be required to pay for their meals using the government’s eCitizen platform. 

In a notice on Tuesday, February 6, the UoN administration instructed twelve kitchens in the institution to comply with the new changes. 

This follows an executive order directing all government departments to migrate to the eCitizen platform.

“The Kenyan Government has mandated that all payments to the University of Nairobi be made via the e-Citizen platform. Complying with this directive, the University has established the required systems to enable clients to make payments through E-Citizen,” read the notice in part.

UoN students will be required to use the government’s 222222 pay bill and then the Outlet/Live identifier in capital letters followed by a hyphen and your name (e.g. NUK1-name) as the account number. The students will then key in the amount to be paid followed by their pin to complete the payment.

The institution noted that the outlet number will be different across the twelve kitchens.

Kitchen outlets included in the system include; Kitchen One next to Students' Clinic, Women's Hall Kitchen, Mamlaka Kitchen, Chiromo Kitchen, Parklands Kitchen, Lower Kabete Kitchen, Upper Kabete Kitchen, and Kikuyu Kitchen.

Others are; Kenya Science Kitchen, Kenyatta Medical School Kitchen, Comcare Café, and Central Catering Unit.

This comes days after the Ministry of Education ordered all parents with learners in National High Schools to pay fees via the eCitizen platform.

Immigration PS Julius Bitok on Monday said the move will promote transparency and accountability.

Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung'u in December 2023  announced new charge rates to be used by Kenyans on eCitizen transactions. 

The charges are as follows; 

Below Ksh.199 will be charged at Ksh.5

Between Ksh.200 - Ksh.299 at Ksh.10

Between Ksh.300 - Ksh.499 at Ksh.15

Between Ksh.500 - Ksh.699 at Ksh.20

Between Ksh.700 - Ksh.999 at Ksh.25

Over Ksh.1000 - Ksh.50
