Armed Gang Ambush Mourners, Rob Them Money, Phones and Destroy Cars

Police officers are investigating a case where a gang ambushed mourners, stole their property, and made away with the funeral cash. 

According to a police report filed at Jomvu Police Station, Mombasa, the incident happened on Friday, February 9 when a group of young men stormed a homestead where mourners were conducting a funeral fundraiser and staged a robbery. 

The gang of nine members first assaulted the person who was leading the fundraiser then stole a laptop, musical instruments, phones, and other valuables.

After holding the mourners hostage, they stole the money which was raised to accord the deceased a decent sendoff.

The group also vandalised three motor vehicles which were parked inside the compound.

However, while fleeing from the scene of the crime, a mob descended on two members of the gang who were fatally wounded and burnt beyond recognition.

The scene was processed and the bodies were moved to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting autopsy results.

Meanwhile, detectives have launched a manhunt for the remaining gang members who are still at large.

The incident was reported at Jomvu Police Station in Mombasa and police are also exploring the possibility of the re-emergence of gangs in the Coastal City.

The gang wreaked havoc forcing the government to launch an operation in the region. The operation was led by the then Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

During the operation, several members of the gang were arrested while others voluntarily surrendered.
