Nairobi residents were caught unawares after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched an impromptu crackdown.

The officers who collaborated with security officers arrested and detained several residents who were caught violating traffic rules.

Among those who were nabbed included those who were found crossing the roads at undesignated points instead of using the footbridges.

Others were arrested for walking on the road risking their lives instead of using the walkways in various parts of the city. 

Most of the pedestrians were arrested around the Nyayo and Bellevue areas.

Confirming the operation, NTSA issued a statement advising city residents to observe traffic rules.

"Pedestrians must use available footbridges, walkways and other designated crossing points to ensure their safety. This morning, several pedestrians who failed to obey traffic rules were detained," NTSA stated.

It is not clear which action was taken against the pedestrian after the morning arrest

As of February 2024, 649 people had lost their lives in road accidents in the country. The majority of the fatalities were pedestrians, followed by motorcyclists, passengers, drivers, pillion passengers and pedal cyclists.

Motorcyclists recorded 152 deaths marking a slight decrease compared to 177 in 2023.

“In 2024, at least 125 passengers have lost their lives in road crashes compared to 114 in 2023 with 43 drivers losing their lives in road accidents which is a decrease compared to 59 in the same period last year,” NTSA said.

To address the increasing cases of road accidents, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced a crackdown targeting public service vehicles. He ordered the re-testing of drivers.
