NTSA on Tuesday arrested several pedestrians crossing the roads at undesignated points instead of using the footbridges.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has cautioned Kenyans against crossing roads at undesignated points instead of using the footbridges.

In a video posted on the authority’s social media platforms on Thursday, March 28, KENHA said Kenyans would be fined up to Sh 5000 if found not using the footbridges.

The road agency noted that the minimum fine for such an offense is Sh 500.

“Pedestrians must utilize the available footbridges to ensure their safety. Don’t save time, Save lives,” KENHA stated.

The warning comes a day after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched an impromptu crackdown on pedestrians crossing the roads at undesignated points.

NTSA also nabbed pedestrians walking on the road risking their lives instead of using the walkways in various parts of the city. Most of the pedestrians were arrested around the Nyayo and Bellevue areas.

In a statement after the crackdown, NTSA advised Kenyans to observe traffic rules to avoid inconveniences.

"Pedestrians must use available footbridges, walkways, and other designated crossing points to ensure their safety. This morning, several pedestrians who failed to obey traffic rules were detained," NTSA stated.

According to NTSA, 649 people had lost their lives in road accidents in the country as of February 2024.

The majority of the fatalities were pedestrians, followed by motorcyclists, passengers, drivers, pillion passengers, and pedal cyclists.
