One family is mourning the death of a six-year-old child who passed on after eating lunch.

Five family members have also been rushed to various hospitals after consuming the meal which reports alleged that it was poisonous.

According to reports, the deceased mother cooked cassava and served it to her family during lunchtime. They then began experiencing stomach aches, vomiting and diarrhoea. 

Their neighbours took them to Ekerenyo Hospital, where they received first aid treatment before being transferred to Nyamira General Hospital for more medical attention.

The parents and one child were treated and discharged, while another child was in critical condition following the effects of the poison.

"She went out for some menial work and after finishing she was given the cassava. When she got back home she cooked for her family," one of the neighbours stated.

"One of the boys died on arrival. The other one was critically ill and was admitted in our ICU. We managed to stabilise the other ones," Angela Ogendi, a medical officer stated.

Following the death, police launched an investigation into the case. The officers visited the family home where they took samples of the cooked and uncooked cassava for more investigations. 

They are also expected to grill the person who gave the woman the cassava.
