Motorists have since been advised to use alternative routes until further notice.

The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has announced the immediate closure of a major road due to the ravaging effects of the floods.

In a statement, KeNHA indicated that Madogo - Hola (B89) Road, between Madogo Junction and Bura has been closed immediately.

Traffic on the said road has been redirected with motorists being advised to find alternative routes.

According to KeNHA, the floods have affected a five-kilometre stretch of that major highway thus rendering it impassable.

In the notice, the highway authority pointed out that the section of the road poses a great risk to motorists thus prompting the immediate closure.

Motorists have since been advised to use alternative routes until further notice.

"KeNHA hereby closes Madogo - Hola (B89) Road, between Madogo Junction and Bura immediately due to flooding.

Heavy rains in the region have led to flood waters crossing the road at Dukanotu area, approximately five (5) kilometres from Cheredende Centre," the notice read in part.

"This has resulted in extensive flooding covering a section of almost one (1) kilometre on the Madogo - Bura road, posing significant risks to road users. KeNHA has therefore declared the affected road section unsafe and has consequently closed it until the flood waters recede and the damaged section is reinstated," it added.

However, KeNHA assured motorists that the affected section would be assessed and repaired on time to allow traffic flow resumption.

"The Authority contractor is currently on site, ready to address any emergent situation once the water subsides. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and refrain from driving on flooded roads."

The immediate closure comes just days after a bus full of passengers was nearly washed away by the flooding water. The passengers were left stranded for almost six hours before Kenya Red Cross deployed boats to rescue them.

Following reported heavy rains in the country, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued an advisory for motorists to exercise caution.
