Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has directed all hotels and camps adjacent to rivers within national parks and reserves to prepare for evacuation.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 1, CS Mutua noted that several camps have been impacted by the ongoing heavy rains in the country.

The Tourism CS ordered hotels and camps to develop clear evacuation, transportation, and hospitality protocols.

“Attention all hotels and camps adjacent to rivers within national parks and reserves: Prepare for potential evacuations should rivers overflow. Develop clear evacuation, transportation, and hospitality protocols,” Mutua stated.

He also urged the management of the hotels and camps to contact the national emergency disaster helpline in case of any emergency.

“Several camps have been impacted, prompting our coordinated rescue efforts, which have been effective thus far. To report emergencies, contact the National Emergency Disaster Helpline: 0800721571,” CS Mutua added.

The Directives come after a number of hotels, camps, and lodges within the Maasai Mara Game Reserve submerged.

According to reports, River Telek burst its banks following the ongoing heavy rains and caused flooding within the hotels and camps.

Evacuation of guests and tourists in the facilities is currently ongoing.
