The Kenya Met Department has warned members of the public of intensified heavy rains exceeding 40mm in 24 hours.

In a statement on Thursday, May 2, the weatherman said the heavy rains will be expected in the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South Lowlands, and Northern Kenya.

The Met Department noted that the heavy downpour will be expected between May 2 and May 4, 2024. 

“Heavy rainfall of more than 40mm in 24hrs expected across Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Nairobi, and Southeast Lowlands from May 2nd to 4th. This may extend to northern Kenya on May 3rd-4th,” read the statement in part.

In Nairobi, the Met Department projected that heavy rainfall will be experienced in Embakasi South, Roysambu, Kasarani, Starehe, Madaraka, Westlands, and Dagoretti North.

At the same time, the weatherman warned of heavy winds exceeding 30 knots on the coast and northeast Kenya.

“Strong southerly winds, exceeding 30 knots, forecasted for coastal areas and Northeast Kenya on May 2nd, 2024, likely intensifying to over 40 knots from May 3rd to 5th,” the Met Department added.

Further, the weatherman warned of large ocean waves of more than 2 meters anticipated in the Indian Ocean from May 2, 2024, to May 5, 2024.
