The owner of a building that collapsed in Ruaka, Kiambu County last week was Monday, November 21, arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). 

In an update by DCI on Monday, the owner identified as Jennifer Kamau, 59, was attempting to flee the country when detectives pounced on her. 

"Hawk-eyed sleuths based at the region’s main international gateway, pounced on Jennifer Kamau, 59, minutes before she boarded a flight destined for Texas, in the United of America.

"However, following the arrest, the woman was taken ill and rushed to a city hospital by our officers, where she is receiving treatment before being arraigned in court," part of the statement read.

In the unfortunate incident that occurred in Ruaka on Thursday last week, two people lost their lives after a six storey building belonging to the woman collapsed on an adjacent building, while tenants were asleep at around 3 am.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi who was at the scene said they will have an emergency meeting to address the issue of buildings collapsing.

He said they are concerned as a government by the rising number of wanting structures that have cost lives.

“We have agreed to sit down and find immediate ways of addressing this menace. We cannot continue to lose innocent lives like this,” Wamatangi said.
