Parents of 1,389 Jamuhuri Highs School students will have to part with thousands of shillings as damages for properties destroyed during a fire incident on Sunday, November 14.

In a communique to parents informing them about the resumption of learning, each parent will have to pay Sh13,385 to cater for damaged items valued at Sh23, 592,950.

According to the Board of Management calculations, each student was to pay Sh13,685 as damages but the school footed Sh3600 for each student, thanks to meal savings and well-wishers.

"The Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works report on the burnt hall-cum-dormitory, that was hosting 225 students, states that the damages us severe and will require further assessment to get the Bill of Quantities. However, the preliminary quantity surveyor report stands at Sh17 million," Awour said in the newsletter.

Students items that were damaged have been valued at Sh4,707,450. 113 Double-decker beds destroyed valued at Sh1,525,500. Damaged computers have been valued at Sh250,00 while that of CCTV and solar lamps have been valued at Sh110,000. The total damaged items plus the dormitory brings the total costs to Sh23, 592,950.

The school says students whose items were destroyed by the fire, specifically beddings and uniforms, will be catered for by the school.

Parents have also been directed to clear their outstanding fees before reporting back to school with their children on the scheduled dates between Wednesday, December 1 and Tuesday, December 7.
