IEBC had earlier suspended the gubernatorial elections in Kakamega and Mombasa Counties. 

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that the Mombasa and Kakamega gubernatorial by-elections will be held on August 23, 2022. 

IEBC commissioner Francis Wanderi made the announcement while addressing the press on Tuesday, August 9. 

Wanderi also mentioned that similar By-elections would take place in other areas Elections had been suspended including Kitui Rural, Kacheliba, Pokot South, and Rongai in Nakuru county. 

On Monday, IEBC suspended the Gubernatorial elections in the two Counties over mix up in printing. 

"The elections for the Gubernatorial elective position in Kakamega and Mombasa Counties; and for the Member of National Assembly for Kacheliba and Pokot South Constituencies, are postponed to a later date to be announced through a gazette notice.

"The Commission submitted correct ballot proofs and packing list to the printer on time as required. The printer has since agreed to a quick reprint of the affected ballot papers," IEBC said while explaining the cancelation.

The electoral body also postponed elections in Eldas Constituency, Wajir County following a gunfire incident on Monday night, August 8.

In a press statement on Tuesday, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the gunfire incident had occurred at the constituency’s election office where ballot papers were stored.

He added that election officials in the constituency were trapped in the offices as they prepared to dispatch materials to polling stations.
