Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has opposed plans to abolish boarding primary schools.

The Former Governor while reacting to reports indicating that the government is set to ban boarding for grades 1 to 9 said the move is ill-advised.

He stated that many parents opt to take their children to boarding schools to protect them from societal challenges.

"Hii mambo ya ku abolish primary boarding schools hapana. In my own opinion, I think the move is ill-advised. For some children, a boarding school is the best and safest place to be away from chaotic marriages, and torture from step father's, mothers, uncles and aunts etc. Not forgetting orphans. Also single mothers and slay queens who are hustling normally bring different men/ uncles to their homes when their kids are away in boarding schools," he wrote on Facebook.

Adding that:

"There's no way I can criticise the same Government which I serve and fought for but I think there's still room for discussions and negotiations."

On Tuesday, Principal Secretary for Basic Education Belio Kipsang said the government will abolish boarding primary schools beginning January 2023.

“We cannot outsource our responsibility as we parents, we only co-parent with teachers but we cannot outsource parenting from the teachers,” Kipsang' said.

“Going forward, day schooling will be the direction, that’s the only way we shall be able to engage with our children.”

The revelation has generated mixed reactions among Kenyans with some opposing while others supporting.
