Health CAS Rashid Aman said the Industrial Area Remand Prison in Nairobi will not be allowed to receive more remandees from Wednesday.

Speaking on Tuesday during the during the update on the virus in the country, CAS Aman said the decision was made following the outbreak affecting 35 detainees at the facility.

Visits to the prison will continue to be suspended as authorities try to contain the spread of the disease.

Dr Aman said 55 per cent of the confirmed cases in Nairobi in the last 24 hours came from the remand prison.

Distribution in Counties

"This directive now stops remandees being transferred to that facility until such a time we can contain the situation," Aman said.

Kenya reported 137 new cases of Covid-19 from a sample size of 1,258 samples bringing the number of cases so far to 39,586.

Distribution of the 137 cases by Counties is as follows; Nairobi 64, Turkana 34, Mombasa 12, Kiambu 8, Uasin Gishu 6, Trans Nzoia 4, Meru 1, Nakuru 1, Kajiado 1, Kericho 1, Kisii 1, Kisumu 1, Laikipia 1, Machakos 1 and Tharaka Nithi 1.
296 more patients have recovered from the virus bringing the total number of recoveries to 27,328.
