Police in Malindi are investigating an incident where a police officer shot himself dead moments after shooting dead a boda boda rider on Thursday evening, December 22.

Confirming the incident, Malindi Deputy County Commissioner Thuo Ngugi said that investigations were going on determine reasons behind the incidents.

The police stated that the said police officer had shot himself below the chin before the bullet exited on his skull.

The firearm which he used during the incident was retrieved near his body.

A police report detailed that the deceased officer had shot dead the boda boda rider outside the Malindi Airport under unclear circumstances before going missing after the incident.

The incident sparked protests among members of the public outside the Malindi Airport who began throwing stones at the police.

The bodies of the deceased were ferried to Malindi Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

The incident comes weeks after a police officer shot himself dead in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia county on December 8.

Corporal Rionosia Maiywa is reported to have turned the trigger on himself at his house at Cherangany police station.

According to a police OB report, the matter was reported at the same station by one of the deceased’s colleagues.

The deceased was found dead and seated on a plastic chair inside his house.
