  • Mike Sonko's Lawyer John Khaminwa stormed out of Milimani Court.
  • The court dismissed an application that Sonko is unfit for trial.

Veteran Lawyer John Khaminwa stormed out of Milimani Court during the hearing of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s graft case.

Khaminwa had questioned the absence of media during the proceedings attended by Mike Sonko.

He pointed out there was no reason for the court to lock out the press in the proceedings which are of public interest.

The lawyer accused Chief Magistrate, Douglas Ogoti of unfairness in the Ksh10 million graft case facing his client.

He later told the press that he was not given the proper documents in Sonko's case. The Chief Magistrate had dismissed an application for adjournment.

Khaminwa and the others claimed the court denied them time to gather evidence from Sonko’s former lawyers for adequate preparation for the case.

Fit For Trial

Sonko's lawyers had presented medical reports that indicated that he was unfit to stand trial.

But on Monday Ogoti dismissed the application saying an independent medical report shows Sonko is fit and in sound mind to stand trial.

The test was conducted by four independent medical doctors from the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The court dismissed a medical report obtained from private doctors presented before it by Sonko’s lawyers.

A hearing of the second graft case is also underway, in which Sonko and four others are accused of embezzling Sh14.1 million.
