President Uhuru Kenyatta has reached out to Tanzania's Vice President Samia Hassan Suluhu and pledged Kenya's total support in this period of mourning.

Speaking at State House while eulogising the late Magufuli, President Kenyatta assured Hon Samia Hassan that Kenya has been Tanzania's ally and the relationship will remain so.

"Nilipata nafasi leo asubuhi ya kuongea na naibu wa rais Suluhu Hassan na nikamhakikishia ya kwamba twasimama pamoja naye wakati huu mgumu na tutaendelea kushirikiana na yeye na serikali ya Tanzania na pamoja na wananchi wote wa  Tanzania mpaka tuhakikishe mzee wetu Magufuli tumempumzisha," he said.

News of Magufuli's death was announced on Wednesday Hon. Samia Hassan Suluhu who noted that he succumbed to complications of the heart.


According to Suluhu, Magufuli was admitted at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute in Tanzania on March 6, and had been receiving treatment until March 17, 2021 when he passed on.

As a way of honouring Magufuli, President Kenyatta has announced that Kenya will observe a seven day period of national mourning.

Kenya will also fly the East African Community and the Republic of Kenya will be flown at half-mast in Kenya and all territories of Kenya abroad from today March 18 until sunset on the day of Magufuli's funeral.

"The flag of the East African Community and the flag of the Republic of Kenya shall be flown at half-mast in honour of Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli," Uhuru said.
