ODM Leader Raila Odinga has congratulated the new Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan after she was inaugurated earlier today.

In a tweet, Odinga hailed President Samia for being the first female Head of Estate in the entire East African region.

The former Kenyan Prime Minister wished President Samia well, adding that he hopes she will work towards strengthening the good relationship between Kenya and Tanzania.

“History has been made this morning in the East Africa region. Congratulations @SuluhuSamia on taking office as the first female President of Tanzania. Mama @IdaOdinga and I pray for your success in the task ahead of leading your people and enhancing ties between our nations,” Odinga tweeted.

President Samia Suluhu was sworn-in a few minutes ago at State House Dar Es Salaam and now becomes the sixth President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Following her inauguration, she is expected to propose a name for a candidate to be considered for appointment as Deputy President.

Being from Zanzibar, President Samia is required to propose a nominee from Tanzania mainland.

Meanwhile, a lot is expected of the new president as she assumes office. Top on the list is strengthening the fight against Covid-19 which did not happen during the reign of the late President John Pombe Magufuli.

President Samia is expected to come up with necessary guidelines to help combat the spread of the virus in the country.

Many are hoping that with President Samia in power, she’ll enhance ties with other foreign nations like Kenya. The relationship between Kenya and Tanzania has been shaky over the past few months.
