Sonko Loses Case Against Nairobi Deputy Governor Anne Mwenda

The Court of Appeal has thrown out a petition seeking to stop Anne Kananu Mwenda from being sworn-in as Nairobi Deputy Governor.

The petition filed by Ex-Nairobi Mike Sonko was dismissed on grounds that it had been overtaken by events, therefore, the court could not issue the prayers requested.

"The court does not, and ought not, make orders in vain, or engage in an academic exercise," the court ruled.

In the petition, Sonko said the planned vetting and appointment of Ms Kananu to succeed him was illegal because her nomination was no longer valid.

Sonko argued that he revoked Kananu’s nomination; therefore she did not qualify for vetting for the position f Nairobi Governor.

"Pending the hearing and determination of this motion, a conservatory order do issue, prohibiting the 3rd respondent, Nairobi County Assembly from vetting and approving as nominee to the post of Nairobi city county deputy governor Anne Kananu," Sonko’s petition read in part.

According to Sonko, he revoked Anne Mwenda’s nomination following alleged pressure from a relative of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In his court documents, Sonko claimed that Ms Christina Pratt, President Kenyatta’s elder sister, attempted to impose on him Ms Jane Weru as deputy governor.

“Ms Weru is the person recommended by Christine Pratt Kenyatta to Mr Sonko to assume the role and capacity of the Nairobi county governor immediately prior to unlawful and sham impeachment of the cross petitioner by reason of which she is a relevant party,” Sonko said in his court documents.
