U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has congratulated Tanzania’s new president Samia Suluhu Hassan after being sworn-in.

US VP Kamala noted that she was looking forward to strengthening ties between the two countries.  

"Sending best wishes to @SuluhuSamia following her swearing-in as Tanzania's new President - the first woman to hold the office. The United States stands ready to work with you to strengthen relations between our countries," the US VP tweeted. 

Tanzania's Samia Suluhu Hassan made history on Friday when she was sworn in as the country's first female president after the sudden death of John Magufuli. 

Hassan, 61, hails from the island of Zanzibar and has been vice president since 2015.  She will finish Magufuli's second five-year term in 2025.
