President Uhuru Kenyatta has ruled out tax reliefs and economic stimulus for workers and businesses.

Kenyans have been complaining of tough economic times following the imposition of a new lockdown to control the spread of coronavirus.

Uhuru, however, stated that if there will be tax reliefs they will focus on the five counties currently under partial lockdown.

The tax relief will target sectors hard hit by fresh restrictions like hospitality.

Financial Burden

“We have a problem in the hospitality sector, we are also likely to have a problem in the entertainment sector and we will look to see how we can work together to support some of these sectors,” Mr. Kenyatta on Thursday.

“But that has to be on an issue-by-issue basis because when you talk tax you talk about the whole country, we will have to look at wherever measures that can specifically apply to within particular counties.”

The national government will reportedly engage the county governments to offer reliefs like levy and rates waiver to ease the burden felt by Kenyans.

Uhuru restricted movement in and out of the five counties and imposed an 8 pm- 4 pm curfew. He also ordered the closure of bars, churches, and in-person schooling.
