DP William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ruled out giving direct tickets to aspirants.

Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party have announced their primaries dates.

In a statement on Friday, UDA's National Elections Board (NEB) Chairman Anthony Mwaura said that the party’s primaries will be held on April 14.

The party ruled out direct nominations as Mwaura indicated that all the candidates aspiring for the party ticket would be subjected to competition.

"The Board is now pleased to announce that it will conduct nominations across the country on the 14th April 2022," Mr. Mwaura affirmed.

“Aspirants are encouraged to continue preparing and popularising their bid under the UDA in preparations for the party nominations,” he added.

He further intimated that the party had received over 6,000 aspirants in various elective seats.

On the other hand, ODM’s National Elections Board (NEB) Chairperson Catherine Muma said that the Raila-led part will hold its nominations on April 1 and April 22.

The Orange party had earlier announced that it would issue direct tickets to popular aspirants and the announcement on Friday was a U-turn.

“Opinion poll is already done and direct ticket will be influenced by the opinion polls. If it shows an aspirant is in clear lead then it will be a waste of money to take them to primaries,” Muma told the Star earlier.
