Police officers are following up on a call made by one of the thugs immediately after shooting KBC journalist Betty Mutekhele Barasa twice in the head.
The senior video editor at the public broadcaster was murdered in her house shortly after returning home from work on the night of April 7, 2021.
A police officer adept with the investigations has since intimated that an eyewitness who was in hiding at the time of the incident revealed that the assailant was taking instructions from someone on the phone.

The gang of three is said to have accosted Betty at the gate then led her into the house where they took her family hostage.
They started harassing the family when they saw their demands are not being met.
Two thugs then accompanied Betty to her room upstairs while one was left to watch the other family members.
It has now emerged that the househelp who had gone to open the gate for Betty saw the three men hiding in a nearby building still under construction and ran. She was accompanied by one of Betty's children.
"There were screams and this prompted Mutekhele's husband to walk out and check what the matter could be. It is here that the thugs asked Mutekhele to alight from his car and get inside the house together with her husband.
"The trio spent the first five minutes looking for the house help and they did not get her. She was hiding together with Mutekhele's daughter," a source adept with the matter told a local daily.
The thugs left the house with a laptop and a phone.
Betty's lifeless body was taken to the Montezuma funeral home.
Her demise has since attracted an outpouring of condolences from journalists and members of the public alike.
