Ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has set social media ablaze after he shared a video participating in manual labour at a construction site (mjengo).

In the video captioned “Life after politics is stress free” Sonko can be seen ferrying sand as other workers engage in different tasks.

It is not clear when the video was recorded as it is undated. It is also not clear where the construction site is located.

The video has elicited massive reactions with many lauding and ridiculing Sonko for engaging in ‘mjengo’ activities.


Meanwhile, the once powerful Nairobi governor was impeached in December 2020 after Senators voted overwhelmingly in favour of all the four charges brought against him which include; Gross Violation of the Constitution, Abuse of Office, Misconduct and Crimes against National Law.

27 Senators voted for Sonko’s impeachment while 16 voted against it. Two Senators including Nairobi’s Johnson Sakaja and Makueni’s Mutula Kilonzo Jnr abstained.

“The effect of the vote is that pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution section 33 of the County Government Act and Standing order number 75 of the Senate Standing Orders, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, the Governor of Nairobi County stands impeached,” Senator Speaker Ken Lusaka said.
