The family said: The MP has been sick for years and today he rested peacefully at our home.

Former Matungu Member of Parliament Joseph Wamukoya is dead.

According to the family, the former legislator died on Monday morning at his home.

"The MP has been sick for years and today he rested peacefully at our home," the deceased’s wife Elizabeth Wamukoya told a local daily.

"We have lost a decent man who helped shape the history of Matungu," she added.

According to the family, the late Wamukoya had been ailing for quite some time and was receiving treatment at a hospital in Bungoma.

The late Wamukoya served as Matungu MP for one term (1997 to 2002). He was elected on a Kanu party ticket.

He unsuccessfully contested the Matungu seat in the 2002 and 2007 general elections losing to David Were.

In addition to being an MP, he also served as an Assistant Lands Minister in late President Daniel Moi’s administration.

Prior to joining politics, the late Wamukoya worked as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi where he taught teaching veterinary services.

Wamukoya’s death comes six months after the third Matungu MP Justus Murunga died in office.
