  • Government has set aside billions to procure Covid-19 vaccine for Kenyans.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani stated that the government has set aside Ksh7 billion for procurement of the Covid-19 vaccine.

On Monday, the CS explained that the funds will be used to acquire the COVID-19 vaccine from different manufacturers to avoid uncertainties.

The government is planning to import the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Reports indicated that the government had initiated the move as the world struggles to get a hold of the AstraZeneca vaccine due to the situation in India.

India banned the exportation of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine to focus on vaccinating its citizens first to mitigate rising cases of Covid-19.

Kenya received its first batch of around one million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines through the COVAX Facility in March.

Last month Johnson & Johnson agreed to supply up to 400 million doses of its Covid-19 vaccine to the African Union (AU) from the third quarter of 2021.
