  • Uganda has issued new rules for Kenyan travellers to the country over the new Indian covid variant.

Uganda has asked Kenyan travellers to reconsider travelling to the East African country over the Indian Covid-19 variant.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ugandan Health Ministry stated that travellers from Kenya should consider postponing non-essential travel to Uganda.

The country announced it has suspended flights from India and all passengers originating from the Asian country effective 1st May 2021.

"Based on the current global trend of the COVID-19 outbreak, MOH categorized countries in relation to the COVID-19 risk they pose. Category 1: All flights from India and all passengers originating from India were suspended effective 1st May 2021 at 23:59hrs," the statement read.

"Category 2: Travelers from the USA, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Tanzania should consider postponing non-essential travel to Uganda," it added.

Kenya has 8 cases of the Indian covid variant dubbed B.1.617 which were identified in the lakeside region of Kisumu.

The county government of Kisumu has quarantined 100 workers who came into close contact with 8 people that tested positive for the Indian covid variant.

"Following gene sequencing carried out on samples by the National government testing laboratories, it has been ascertained that one of the samples turned positive for the Indian variant of Covid-19," the presser read

"At least 100 other workers who are said to have had close contact with the 8 have been placed under strict quarantine as the county moves with speed to stop a further spread of the virus," it added.
