The DCI had on Tuesday last week stated that Matiang’i would be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and publication of false information.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has dropped charges against former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 13, by the Deputy Director of Prosecutions Lilian Obuo, there was no sufficient evidence to charge the former CS and his lawyer.

“Upon independent and thorough analysis of the evidence availed and a review of the statements of the witnesses, the Director of Public Prosecutions found that the evidence provided was not sufficient to sustain the above charges against Dr. Fred Okeng'o Matiang'i and his advocate Mr. Danstan Omani.

“The evidence provided did not meet the ingredients needed to prove each of the afore-mentioned offences as required by law,” the statement read in part.

The DPP at the same time directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to close the inquiry file on Matiang’i with no further action.

“The Director of Public Prosecutions has therefore directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to close the inquiry file with no further police action,” the statement added.

The DCI had on Tuesday last week stated that Matiang’i would be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and publication of false information.

According to the DCI Matiang’i attempted to cause panic and chaos among Kenyans by claiming that his home had been raided.
